08 – Stunning flight to Anchorage and picking up the camper

Relieved to say we have taken our last plane ride for another 4 weeks…but it was gorgeous once we emerged from the thick cloud that had socked in over Juneau for our second day. It is weird and slightly unsettling when, cruising at 34,000 feet, you randomly peer out of the plane window to spot tall craggy mountain tops poking above the cloud line.

The 1hour 45 min flight continued to provide us with aerial scenery that was jaw dropping. Huge swathes of ocean without any indication of signs of life or activity. Normally shipping activity can be spotted somewhere but it is remarkable how vast and open the coastline is.

this is final approach to Anchorage and still very little evidence of activity to see

Anchorage

Tomorrow we start the “more spontaneous” part of our travels. We have no set route in mind and no real plan for the next 20 days other than to explore, by road, the vast wilderness and beauty of the interior of Alaska. We are way north on latitude 61 degrees, that’s further north than the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland and at 11.30pm last night, the sun was still glinting off the tops of the mountains.

Look at how high the snow gets here.

Our Camper

This is our home for the next 3 weeks.
